My wallet is exactly what I wanted and unlike anything I could find anywhere else. Thanks Jacquelyn! ~  Joel Eng on Apr 9, 2018 The item is handsomely done, but what is so much more impressing is the customer service provided. Jacquelyn is unbelievably attentive to each request and does everything to meet the request. On top of that, she provides different ideas on enhancing the product. I just think she is the BEST! ~ Greg  I have designed my wood wallets to hold business cards, credit cards and cash. My cases are enclosed so every

Home Office Desk for a Lifetime

Reclaimed Home Office Desk  Sometimes it's a phone call, sometimes I'm just driving down the road and come upon a stack of beams put out on Friday from a construction crew, sometimes I have to go hunting but inevitably I come across timber that has served it's purpose and is slated for the landfill. Most of the time I look at the wood and can see right away another use for it.  Laying out the wood for a project is a huge element in the success of the piece. Noticing the grain direction, colors, knots, splits or figure all have to do with the overall design of the piece. I rearrange until my body feels that right feeling. It's a sense. All is right. That's when I proceed to the first step.    Just because the wood is reclaimed doesn't mean it comes looking like the finished product. It all started for me when I was invited to come get some wood from an old metal mill. Friends of friends were turning this old building into a physical therapy center and they had fl

Art Deco Hoop Earrings

These are my latest hoops I am excited to show off. They are selling and they are surprisingly elegant while at the same time being relaxed. My mother in law put on the silver pair (she loves wearing all shades of black white grey . . . and they were amazing! She was immediately all set to go anywhere. I couldn't believe how instantly dressed up she appeared as a result of these hoops! Remember, these are not huge (only 1 7/8" tall) and they are super light! Here are my favorite hoops right now: I love the appearance of leather and steel in these Cherry Wood Hoops. Their size is perfection as they are not huge. I will no doubt make a large scale of them but I am finding that a lot of women wear a more conservative size earring. These fit my adorable mother in law who is petitte. A personal goal achieved, check! I also made these in the two following colors: The silver version was my first attempt at this design. I tweaked the design a bit adding some beads and e

Perfect45Degree becomes Instar.Design

I have been making changes here at the shop. A new CNC (for those of you who don't know, it's a beautiful new tool) has opened up a direction I have wanted to explore. I am now making wood earrings, signs, boxes, wallets and sculpture. You will see over time what I am able to produce as I learn my way around this very cool machine. I am finding it's really a matter of time. I could work 24/7 and not run out of ideas or projects. My love for drawing and computer aided drafting combined with my sculpture expertise make this tool a very nice fit for my artistic expression. As in most cases the tool only gets me started. I still had shape and finish everything I create. What the tool does is help me make enough product to keep my prices lower and share more of it around the world. Here's a few pics of what I've been up to: Earrings by Instar Design Walnut Honey Comb Earrings  Redwood PNW Tree Earrings Walnut Hex Earrings Purple Hear

Jewelry Box to Hold a Lifetime

Image
A jewelry box from the heart by Instar Design   This jewelry box was specifically designed for my client, searching for the perfect 5th year anniversary gift for his wife. He wanted tons of storage while remaining a countertop piece, a keltic reference, and the sensual box legs which I have had repeated requests for throughout the years. He shared examples with me of boxes he liked for storage but the design fell short in his eyes.  I came up with an overall concept and the piece evolved as I began collecting the materials for end panels, face frame, the legs and lid. I have never made this leg design so tall and I love them! Plenty of surface for that Claro Walnut to boast of it's red, cream and burnt sienna coloring. I also found a board of  Maple  for this project at Gilmer Wood Company   located in the industrial neighborhood in NW Portland. This Figured Maple was like butter. It milled, carved and sanded in such an effortless way. I have never been fond of Maple

Stunning Slab Dining Table

Stunning Slab Dining Table 10'6" Guanacaste Parota dining table.  Stunning Parota Dining Table designed and built by Jacquelyn Smith of Instar.Design I build the solid wood base and beam of this Trestle Table from Shedua. The trestle style table is an extremely solid design.  Before the finish I do a test set up and fit. I am fortunate to have a fork lift and hoist to aid in moving around these large slabs! Some of my slab tops weigh from 220 to 385lbs! That's a lot of weight especially when the size is 42" x 10'6". Fortunately I used to build buildings so I have first hand knowledge of lifting beams and making things much larger than myself. I am also ever so grateful for the several people in my shop building who have come to the rescue over the years helping me get the slab turned over or into and out of a truck!  This striped beauty is Quarter-sawn Shedua. The deep dark streaks and golden highlights are a perfect match for Guana
